The End of the Beginning.

Today we have good news, bad news, and then some more good news.  But let's start with the good news.

Our historian extraordinaire Mabel Mabel Knot has been discharged from Plancovania Mercy Hospital and is now recuperating quietly at her home.  Yay!  But the bad news is that Mabel M. is not returning to her duties at the Historical Society, having tendered her resignation earlier this morning.  This is a crushing blow to all of us at the Historical Society, mostly because now we are going to have to do all the work.

Also worth reporting that Jerry the orderly has also resigned his duties at Plancovania Mercy and will now be serving as a full-time in-home "caregiver" to Mabel, and has already been moving into the "spare bedroom."  (Jerry is the one who asked me to put "caregiver" and "spare bedroom" into air quotes, not sure what any of that means, although I'm being told that Mabel's home only has one bedroom.)  We wish them nothing but good health and happiness and we thank Mabel for her many tireless years of devotion to not just the historical society, but all of Peepsburgh.  She will be missed, but has asked any well-wishers to phone ahead before visiting, and knock loudly then wait patiently  from the front stoop.  Whatever.

And in our second good news segment, I personally have stayed up all night long scanning the last pages from Volume 1 of the Rose Lake History collection, covering the park in the entirety of it's first decade, all the way up to 1899.  And I've even managed to find some additional photos we haven't yet posted, thanks to Mabel Mabel's meticulous organizational skills.  Girl knows how to label a shoebox, let me tell ya.  Here goes.

I should mention that it's only "The End" of volume one.  Rose Lake park has been putting these volumes out each decade for the past 130 years.  And we've got them all!

Two more important notes that I need to post here before we all go back to The Twig and Berry Tavern for some much deserved libations...  First, if you're as captivated by Volume One of the Rose Lake Story as the rest of us here at the Historical Society you will want to check out the following link for a special treat:

(I'm being told you may need to purchase some software for that link to work.  And possibly a much more expensive computer than the one you own.)

Finally, we have an opening at the Historical Society for a new resident historian.  Pay and benefits are minimal and the hours are quite long.  Must be able to operate a scanner and extensive photoshop skills are required.   This is quite the prestigious position and we imagine that we'll be receiving a long list of resumes in a very short time, so you should act quickly if you have 80+ hrs of free time each week and minimal social obligations.  Also, a good lemon bar recipe wouldn't hurt.
